HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, November 15, 2011 1 Inside KEEPING THE BUGS AT BAY CHRISTMAS CHEER WITH CUPCAKES MOVING THE PARTY OUTDOORS GETTING SET FOR SUMMER Now is the perfect time to brighten up your garden with colourful, new plants. BARBIE CLEANING Firing up the barbecue is a rite of summer everyone looks forward to. But before doing that, make sure the barbie is thoroughly clean. Cooking all those steaks and sausages leaves quite a residue of charcoal. Each different type of grill (gas, electric, charcoal or smoker) has its own cleaning ritual, but common maintenance for each grill is relatively similar. If you have removable racks, take them out and wash them with soap and water. Use steel wool if necessary for some extra elbow grease. Make sure you rinse all the soap off before you cook on them again. When you have given your grill a good brushing, all build-up is gone and it has completely cooled down, spray a light layer of cooking oil on the grate. OUTDOOR CHORES HOME IMPROVEMENT TIME Janita Singh WITH summer in the air, we're looking forward to having more fun in the sun. And now is the perfect time to make few improve- ments so your house and its surroundings are safe, comfortable and good for entertaining. Insects and lawn: Elim- inate insects and pests by mowing your lawn. If you have trouble with mos- quitos, help eliminate them by using insect spray. Outdoor furniture: Out- door tables, chairs and lawn chaises are usually built from materials tough enough to withstand harsh weather conditions, but it's very important to give them specialised care. Fabric: Outdoor woven fabrics generally undergo a chemical treatment during manufacturing to increase stain and moisture resist- ance. Now is the ideal time to hose fabrics down to remove dust and dirt. When kept clean, they will last longer, too. Umbrellas and awnings: You can wash these. If the label says machine-wash- able, place it in a washing machine filled with cold water and a cup of bleach and mild washing powder. Driveways, walks, and patios: Check to see if these are clean and in good con- dition. Give them a good wash and, if driveways are damaged, replace them. 2258244 25/10 Turn your dreams into reality 45 YEARS EXPERIENCE EXCELLENT VALUE FOR MONEY GREAT RESALE VALUE MULTI AWARD WINNING BUILDER Love where you live, but need a new home?
