6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, November 15, 2011 fu1959 SPRAY AND STAY GET RID OF PESTS ANTS TOP THE LIST Janita Singh It's time to start tackling garden pest problems in preparation for the outdoor entertainment season. TOP SUMMER TIP Get your whole house and surrounding sprayed by a professional pest controller to get rid of unwanted visitors planning to spoil your fun. JUST because you're head- ing for a summer break doesn't mean your garden pests and bugs will do the same. Warm weather gives them the conditions to breed and multiply. It's best to start tackling garden pest problems in time for the outdoor enter- taining season. Perhaps surprisingly, the most common garden pests are ants. They typically nest under objects on the sunny side of the garden. If you identify this problem early, get help straight away. There are many products and remedies available to help but few will work per- fectly -- for instance spray- ing a mixture of vinegar and water in the areas they are found or sprinkling your used coffee grinds in the garden and leaving out cu- cumber or citrus peels. Many gardens are also plagued by slugs and snails. Gardens provide them shelter and a plentiful supply of food -- much to the frustration of keen gar- deners. So how do you make your garden a no-go zone for those pesky snails? Pesticides will work but if you have a pet or are par- ticular about using chemi- cals in your garden then look at other options. As slugs and snails like damp and shady places with succulent foliage, a reason- able way to solve your prob- lem is to minimise such areas, particularly at ground level. Hand picking them out of the garden would be the most eco- friendly way to control them. We all love outdoor barbe- cues -- so do mosquitoes. If you have a really bad infestation, call a mosquito exterminator. But in nor- mal situations, it pays to keep your surroundings clean and the house and garden mosquito-proof. Check outdoors for any standing water. This could be in pot plants and old cans, tins, garbage cans or buckets. Still water means mosquito breeding ground. Keep gutters clean and the grass short and install or repair window and door screens to stop them getting in the house. Electronic bug catchers and mosquito/in- sect traps and citronella candles, oils and insect sprays are effective ways to keep mosquitoes at bay. V Supply dumper bin to be placed on site.
