2 HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, November 22, 2011 fu1959 ASBESTOS AWARENESS WEEK HOME WORK HAZARD ARE RENOVATIONS PUTTING YOUR FAMILY AT RISK? See workcover.nsw.gov.au for asbestos removal regulations. Only licensed removalists are allowed to remove asbestos fibres. THE DANGER If you don't observe safety precautions when working with asbestos, you risk exposing yourself and your family to long- term health risks. Disturbed asbestos can release dust containing asbestos fibres. Breathing in this dust can cause asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. There is no cure for mesothelioma. The risk of lung cancer from inhaling asbestos fibres is greatly increased if you smoke. Symptoms of asbestos dust- related diseases may not appear for up to 30 years after the first exposure to it. The average time between exposure and developing mesothelioma is about 45 years. WHAT TO DO Get a licensed professional. When working around the home, if in doubt, assume you are dealing with asbestos. Where asbestos fibres are loose, only licensed removalists are allowed to remove it. For fact sheets, visit health.nsw.gov.au. ASBESTOS Awareness Week this week aims to educate peo- ple about potential dangers when renovating homes. Working in partnership with the Asbestos Education Com- mittee, the Asbestos Diseases Research Institute this week launched the campaign, Think Smart, Think Safe, Think asbes- tosawareness.com.au. The campaign urges homeowners, handymen and renovators -- particularly young DIY couples on tight budgets -- to learn about the dangers of asbestos and how to protect themselves. Director of the institute, Pro- fessor Nico van Zandwijk, said many Australians could be putt- ing their health at risk because they did not understand the dangers of asbestos or know where it might be in their home. Homes built or renovated be- fore 1985 are likely to contain asbestos. If left undisturbed, the material poses no immediate health risk. However, reno- vation or demolition can release asbestos fibres, which can be inhaled, leading to asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.
