HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, November 29, 2011 3 RECYCLING LESS LANDFILL THIS SEASON WITH so much talk about doing the right thing to save our environment, it pays to think carefully before buying something new or throwing out anything old this Christmas. You can help cut down on the waste by giving your old cards and gifts a second life. Old cards, chocolate boxes and pieces of foil can be used in all sorts of creative projects. Regifting can be another way of stopping wastage. This doesn't mean handing down something worthless, but giving away something worthwhile which, with a few additions, is quite acceptable. Used CDs, beads and ribbons, even old jewellery can be given a new lease of life as decorations. And if you enjoy sewing, turn scraps of favourite fabric into pot holders or tablecloths or a fun patchwork cloth for this year's Christmas table. SIMPLE DIY NOT SO POTTY IDEAS GREAT GIFTS ARE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Janita Singh TAKING up a DIY project to turn that patio furniture into something breathtaking is easier then you think. Similarly for Christmas, you can take up small projects which can add style to your home, or make elegant gifts. Look at everyday household items for inspiration. Several of them are in your garden. One such project is making a bird bath using a terracotta clay pot and saucer. Start by getting a terracotta pot and saucer. This can be cheaply bought in any store or nursery. If you have an old one, just give it a good wash. All you need to do is flip your clay pot upside down, which will then serve as the base of your birdbath. The saucer will be used on top of the birdbath to hold the water. Now decorate as you wish -- the options are endless. Then set the bird bath in a special place and enjoy. Terra- cotta pots can also be decorated and filled with Christmas good- ies or pretty knick-knacks. Give your windows & doors a new look. Widest range available.
