HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, November 29, 2011 1 Inside CHEERFUL PROJECTS PICKING THE PERFECT TREE GET IN THE SWING REMOVE STRESS FROM HOLIDAYS AVOID REGULAR HASSLES Janita Singh Christmas decorations need not be expensive. BUYING SMART A lot has changed since the global financial crisis, with more and more of us watching our spending carefully. This should stretch to Christmas shopping -- and take you to your nearest thrift and second-hand/reject shops. Here, you can easily pick up great gifts for your loved ones, as well as decorations for the house. Remember, someone's trash can be your treasure. Old pots and pans, boxes, paintings, even decorations can be picked up for just a couple of dollars. Some items will be as good as new and, with some cleaning and maybe a lick of paint in Christmas colours, you've got yourself a smart buy. Exercise caution when buying electrical second-hand products. CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS CHRISTMAS is a time for joy but with so much planning for enter- tainment, catering, decorating and shopping, it can get stressful. For peace of mind, devise a plan. Make a list of things which can be done earlier such as decorating your home, which is a huge part of this festive period. There are several cost-efficient ways to decorate your house without spending a bundle. Pick a theme Work out your theme. This is a sensible starting point to get things rolling. Do you like mod- ern styling or something more traditional? Do you want some- thing new or can you make do with decorations from last year. Make it cost effective Decorations can be an expens- ive affair, so it pays to be smart. Look at nature to give you a helping hand. You may find ber- ries, pine cones, seed pods and branches in your garden. These are not only free but so much fun to work with. When decorating outdoors, look at your surroundings. A well-landscaped garden, that fea- ture wall, your deck and patio make perfect Christmas settings. Instead of getting a Christmas tree, why not decorate a feature plant in your garden. Decorating shrubs and trees with lights and bows is also fun and inexpensive. Make some or- naments from pine cones and ribbon to hang on the trees.
