HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, December 6, 2011 3 BARBECUES QUALITY IS SEALED IN Cook perfect steaks on the barbie. ELECTROLUX cooking am- bassador, Peter Gilmore of Quay Restaurant provides tips on how to cook a restaurant- quality steak on the barbecue: Always pre-heat the barbe- cue grill with the hood down for at least 10 minutes. Open the hood and turn the burners to medium. Brush the meat with olive oil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Always seal steaks on a hot grill. Once the meat is well coloured on one side, turn it over. Turn your grill to very low and finish cooking. Allow beef to rest on for at least 10 minutes. With a larger barbecue you can cook a larger cut of beef. Seal the meat well and place on a rack in a roasting pan filled with a few centimetres of water. Cook with lid closed until ready and rest before carving. COOKING MOVING WITH THE TIMES CHANGING LIFESTYLES KEY TO CHANGE Changing lifestyles are resulting in a change in preferences for barbecues, from gas to electric. AS the cost of living soars, the trend for downsizing, inner city apartment dwelling and renting continues. The uncertainty of rising in- terest rates and escalating costs has caused many to put the great Aussie dream of a block of land and a big backyard on hold. Most Australians are tighten- ing their belts and staying put, and our lifestyles are adapting accordingly. Living space is at a premium and purchase choices for a home are changing as a result. ''Smaller furniture, clever storage and smart home ap- pliances that make living in smaller spaces easier are be- coming increasingly popular,'' Black and Stone managing di- rector Graham Brake says. He said the demise of the backyard dream has led many people to choose to entertain using smaller gas barbecues suitable for balconies or electric barbecues that can be stored away. ''The Aussie gas barbecue is great when you have space and it can stay put all year round. ''But the increasing number of people who are opting to rent, downsize or live in an apart- ment are choosing electric bar- becues for ease-of-use, cleanli- ness and portability,'' he says. •Gas&Wood Fireplaces • AGA Rayburn Cookers • Butler Sinks & Traditional Tapware CHEMINEE 118 Stanmore Road, Stanmore NSW 2048 Ph: 9564 2694 Fax: 9569 8802 www.cheminee.com.au FIREPLACES 2145233i 10/5 IAN CUBITT S CLASSIC HOME IMPROVEMENTS MULTI-HIA AWARD WINNERS l LICENCE NO: 66902C CONCEPT DESIGN | COUNCIL APPROVAL | CONSTRUCTION | GROUND AND 1ST FLOOR EXTENSIONS Open 7 Days | 152 Russell Street, Emu Plains | www.classichomeimprovements.com.au BUILDER OF QUALITY EXTENSIONS Designed and built for your lifestyle 1300 721 150 2150313 1/11 SERVICES TO ALL DOORS New Showroom: Unit 57/4 Hoyle Ave, CASTLE HILL ( OVER 25 YEARS EXPERIENCE ( DEAN 2042424 2/8 AUTOMATIC OPENERS FR.$450 FREE MEASURE & QUOTE 9894 1233 GARAGE DOOR SALES & REPAIRS PTY LTD NEW SHOWROOM OPENED!
