Home Living : December 13th 2011
HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, December 13, 2011 1 Seen any great ideas? Tell us at email@example.com GIFTS THAT GROW Plants make great Christmas gifts especially for those who like gardening. Tropical plants at this time of year are popular choices. Visit a local nursery for miniature Christmas trees and flowers. ADD SPARKLE Decorate hallways and corridors, an area that will guide your guests to the main house. Replace photos within your frames with past Christmas photos or even use some festive tapestries. COMFORT FIRST The most important part of the holiday is your family and friends gathering to celebrate. Don't put out heirloom decorations that can't be touched or fine china on the table with children around. TIPS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE THINK OF THE ENVIRONMENT GREEN PARTIES Save on paper and send invitations by email, text or social networking . Take advantage of the summer weather and the great outdoors to enjoy time with friends and family Having picnics or a barbecue are two great ways to avoid higher electricity bills from parties inside If you are outdoors, you may like to put out bins or tubs clearly marked for recycling bottles or food waste. Start by making your list and checking it twice. When you are buying food for Christmas, try not to buy too much, and think about leaving things like disposable plates, cutlery and napkins off the list Keep food waste to a minimum. When food scraps have to be disposed of, choose to compost or use a worm farm FESTIVITIES Janita Singh AS we get ready for the festivities, take the time to think about the wider impact of Christmas and the steps you can take to make it greener. There are lots of things we can do for a more sustainable Christmas. An initiative by the Federal Climate Change and Energy Ef- ficiency Department, the Living- Greener website is designed to provide helpful tips on greener living and the many small ways to make a big difference this season. GET REAL As much as possible, stay close to nature. Get a real tree or a potted plant which can be planted in the garden later. For a particularly Australian approach, get a native shrub or plant. Make your own natural tree by gathering branches and setting them in a large pot. DECORATING Buy good-quality decorations that can be re-used for years to come, rather than having decorations and tinsel that end up as landfill come January. Better still, make your own with some paint and scrap paper and packaging that would otherwise be waste. TO MARKET Not everything has to be new. There are many great markets and craft fairs that are a great source for gifts such as vintage jewellery or early edition books. GIVE GADGETS If buying new gadgets for the home, why not pass on your old model to someone else or recycle it. UNIQUE Give a green gift. This could be from the kitchen garden, a potted plant, compost bin or worm farm.
