FLEXO Magazine : December 2011
that their key suppliers’ policies and behaviors support them in their efforts,” commented Craig Evans, vice president of marketing for PolyCello. He continued, “As with other compa- nies who have travelled the sustainability path, we have found that the steps taken to reduce our environmental footprint have also provided financial dividends. Producing less waste, using less energy, less water, less material is good business.” “Not only does SGP give us an economic edge with track- ing, controlling, and improvements in waste and energy use, but it also provides additional motivation to continuously strive to do more and improve what is already being done. Addition- ally we welcome the potential marketing edge that we may enhance current business relationships and ultimately assist with establishing new business,” stated Preston Bryant, vice president of manufacturing, Plastic Packaging, Inc. Paul Douglas, process engineer, added, “Here at PPI, we have a noticeably higher awareness of issues and opportuni- ties associated with efforts around sustainability. You see lights turned off in unoccupied offices, conference rooms and break rooms that were previously left on during normal work hours. Plastic and aluminum recycling bins are used, filled and emptied with high frequency. You will hear associates say, ‘Hey, don’t throw that in the trash we can recycle it!’” CRITERIA REVISED In 2010, the SGP Technical Committee began a complete review and revision of the general printer criteria which was created in 2008. Many sections were revised to clarify require- ments that had proven in practice to be difficult to interpret or understand by printers or auditors involved in the certification process. After almost eight months of work by a committee comprised of members of the SGP Board of Directors, certi- fied facilities, and SGP auditors, a draft of the revised criteria was made available for public comment on the SGP website in late 2010. Final revisions were adopted in May 2011 and the updated criteria document was made available on the SGP Certified Printer and FTA Member Robbie Fantastic Flexibles.
