HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, December 20, 2011 5 POOL CARE CHLORINE TO KILL ALGAE CHLORINE is the best defence against algae, particularly during hot weather. If you have a salt pool, you can use the super chlori- nate button on your salt chlorin- ator to increase the pool's chlorine levels, however, depending on the extent of the algae, you may need to add a large dose of chlorine. Another demand on pool water is the level of phosphates in the water. Algae loves phosphates and feeds on them. Phosphates are introduced to the pool primarily via bird and bat droppings and roof water added to the pool. Chlorine alone can't eliminate phosphates. A chemical called Phosphate Starver will eradicate the phosphates. If the pH level is too high, scaling can form on the walls of a swimming pool and salt chlorin- ator. This can be addressed by adding acid to the water. Con- versely, if the pH level is too low, the water will start to hurt eyes and skin and make swimmers feel itchy. It can also etch away the surface of the pool. Add alkali. POOL HEALTH KEEP YOUR POOL HEALTHY TEST WATER AFTER RAIN Janita Singh Keep your pool healthy during wet summers. Picture: ZODIAC POOLS ALGAL BLOOMS With the high humidity we've been experiencing, algal blooms have been developing, as they thrive in the heat and multiply rapidly on warm sunny days. In addition to clogging up sanitation pathways in the pool water, algae clogs up the pores in a filter,'' Chris Fitzmaurice says. A WET and wild summer means stressful times for pool owners. Pool and spa specialist, Swi- mart, has received lots of com- plaints from pool owners involv- ing pool cleaning. ''The main complaints have been green pools, dirt, leaves and garden beds washed into pools,'' Swimart's national manager Chris Fitzmaurice says. ''Heavy rain dilutes pool chemi- cals, especially salt and chlorine, which causes the pool to turn green. This means the water is not sanitised or healthy.'' Here are some tips from Swi- mart on keeping your pool in pristine condition. After periods of heavy rain The pool water needs to be re- balanced. Take a sample of pool water from elbow depth (as this is more circulated water) and get it tested. Drop the water level to below the top of the weir door so it and the skimmer basket can skim surface debris. If the pool is particularly dirty, increase the hours of filter oper- ation until the pool is clear. The time is dependent on the size of the pool. In times of heavy rainfall, there is more demand for algaecides which kill algae, as these can be diluted by the extra fresh rain- water. With about 80 per cent of pools now saltwater, there is more de- mand for salt, as this makes the pool saline and creates a natural chlorination. Chlorine is only ad- ded when the water gets really dirty. Check and empty the skimmer basket and the hair and lint filter in front of the pump to ensure they are clear of debris, as they can tear when they get too full.
