HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, January 10, 2012 3 FAIR TRADING KEEP YOUR RECEIPTS CHRISTMAS shopping is over but the shops are still ringing in specials and shoppers are keen on grabbing the best deals. Take heed, warns Fair Trading -- and keep all those receipts. Some consumers think they are automatically entitled to a refund if they change their mind after buying. Legally, refunds are only available if the goods are faulty or defective, different to the sample shown or described in advertising, or not fit for the purpose intended. Consumers should always check with the trader about the specific conditions of their refund policy before buying an item. After the Christmas wrapping is off, people may be left with clothing that doesn't fit or a gift that is faulty. Avoid costly mistakes by thinking carefully before buying. Fair Trading says it is illegal for a trader to display signs such as no refunds or no refund after seven days or exchange, repair or store credit only. Details: www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au AIRCONDITIONING KEEPING A COOL HEAD CHOOSE THE RIGHT AIRCONDITIONER Keep your cool by choosing the right airconditioner. Janita Singh LONGER hot days are often the trigger to run out the door and buy a new airconditioner. But before buying, do your homework. Airconditioners can have a big impact on energy bills so it's important to make informed choices. Today, most appliances come with energy ratings on them. Look at the features associated with energy consumption. It's important to choose the most efficient model within your budget. Check the star rating -- the higher the star rating, the better energy consumption. The most popular models are wall-mounted reverse-cycle units which also provide efficient heating in winter. Take room size into consideration. However, room size is not the only factor that contributes to the capacity. Other factors include the number and size of windows, the direction the room faces, the available shade, how well the room is insulated and how many people use the room. Always buy from authorised dealers and shops specialising in airconditioners. Improving the energy efficiency of appliances and products has significant economic and environmental benefits. For a detailed comparison of different airconditioners and to compare savings visit www.energyrating.gov.au.
