MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, January 17, 2012 5 SURVIVAL TIPS PLANNING A BREAK? DON'T LEAVE PLANTS HIGH AND DRY It's important to include plant care in your holiday plans. THE festive season might have ended but many people are still planning summer vacations. Apart from holiday planning and packing, don't forget to leave pot plants in good shape. Before going away: Take down hanging baskets. These can be affected by dry winds and easily damaged. Put outdoor pot plants in shady spots. Group them away from sun and wind. This will keep evapor- ation loss to a minimum. Some plants can also be brought inside the house and kept some- where cool, but you need to know first if they can survive conditions indoors. Small things like placing saucers underneath pots will keep plants moist. Add water-absorbing crystals. It's best to mix these into the soil before planting, but if you still have room to work, add crystals into the potting mix of established pot plants too. These suck up water and then release it when the soil dries. Adding fertiliser will help in your plants' maintenance. There are many varieties of plant watering devices available to keep your plants happy and healthy. Check them out at your local garden centre. GARDENING EASY LAWN MAINTENANCE Keep your lawn healthy this summer. LOOKING after and maintain- ing a beautiful lawn is a reward- ing experience. The result means hours of enjoyment out- doors. Many people believe standing barefoot on grass is a multi-sensory experience and therapeutic. Looking after your lawn in summer shouldn't be a difficult task. As the summer heats up, mow as, and when, necessary. Feeding your lawn during summer is important. Check your local nursery about your lawn type and fertilisers to suit. Summer heat takes a lot out of lawns so be ready to water more frequently. Early morning and late evenings should help. And don't forget that your lawn has its own enemies in the form of pests. If you notice patches of poorly growing yel- lowish grass, check for signs of grubs feeding on the roots. There are safe products readily available to control them.
