Home Living : January 17th 2012
MB HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, January 17, 2012 1 Seen any great ideas? Tell us at email@example.com A SPLASH OF GREY POWER Grey is a popular paint colour this summer. For a simple but elegant look, team greys with a splash of white or brighter accent colours. Grey and white palettes provide the ideal backdrop for rustic pieces. TAKE A FRESH APPROACH Think green and recycle at home this year. It's easy when you know what to do. Many items we throw away without a thought have a second life. BE BOLD AND UP-FRONT This season, be brave and paint your front door in bold colours or use decorative elements to make a statement. High gloss finishes add class to any colour. LIVE GREENER AND SAVE A FORTUNE SMART WAYS TO USE LESS ELECTRICITY Janita Singh Bamboo blinds cost nothing to run and not much to install but will keep a room noticeably cooler. SUN AND RAIN Be solar-smart Take advantage of sunny days to dry clothes and give the electric clothes dryer a rest. You'll save heaps off your energy bills. Even if you live in an apartment, use a clothes rack on your balcony or find a sunny spot inside. Use the power of the sun to provide energy for your home by installing a solar hot water system or installing solar power panels. A solar hot water system can provide up to 90 per cent of your hot- water needs. Pools and spas These lose a lot of water in summer through evaporation -- up to 30,000 litres a year -- and can use as much energy as dishwashers, washing machines and dryers com- bined. Use a pool cover, which can reduce evaporation by up to 90 per cent. A rainwater tank can easily top up a pool. ENERGY SUMMER IS when water usage and energy bills soar as we try to keep cool, but a timely government initiat- ive, available on its website LivingGreener.gov.au, has some useful hints for get- ting around the problem. Sunlight on windows gen- erates a lot of heat so shade windows with blinds, cur- tains, awnings or pergolas. Shade from trees and shrubs also helps. Shut windows and draw curtains during the hottest part of the day, then open to the evening breeze. Create airflow by cross-ventilation. You could be wasting up to half the energy you use to cool your house by allowing cool air to leak out and hot air to enter, so insulate. Electrical appliances and lighting can pump out a lot of heat inside -- turn off lights, computers and tele- visions when not in use. Light globes can make a difference to the heat in a room. Compact fluorescent light globes emit less heat and cost far less to run. Consider using fans in- stead of an airconditoner which chews up a lot of energy. When you leave a room turn the fans off as they cool people not rooms. If you have an aircon- ditioner, use it only when you have to and don't overcool. Setting the ther- mostat to even 1C cooler can save you up to 10 per cent on your bills. Clean the filters regularly to help your sys- tem work more efficiently. When buying aircondition- ers, look for the energy- rating label for energy ef- ficiency.
