is a problem which an experienced, trained, and involved operator/crew could have recognized and addressed before setting up. Consider another situation: There is a process proof where the densities on the color bars are spot on but the pictorial is way off. Were the plates cut to the right curve for that press? Opera- tors get blind-sided by issues like this all the time. Then they have to toss out previous settings and start fresh but only after incurring considerable waste, not to mention the frustration in trying to figure out what’s wrong, which leads us to “exceptions.” Train for ExcEpTions Remember that one problem could often impact several. Operators need to deal with the exceptions for those times where what may have worked before (what may be on the job sheet or dialed into the automated press settings) just isn’t working. Exceptions are hard to train for, but operators and crews who are prepared for these obstacles, know the reasons behind the problem at hand — and are in a much better position to quickly fix the problem. Let’s revisit that one-sixteenth larger bleed in the trap area, a prime example of an “exception.” T his isn’t something that would have been easily noticed during any stage of setup. It just may have happened; i.e. an incorrect graph- ics file for that copy. But whatever the reason, hours could be wasted chang- ing print sequences, roll or inks. Unlike software, an aware and alert crew could anticipate these issues and ef- fectively address them. To further upgrade press crew IQ, don’t overlook your ink supplier. Most companies, including INX International, conduct “tech-intensive” training for new ink customers; periodic update sessions may also be available. But training is more than school. A crew coming off the day shift is in no mood to sit in a classroom setting for one hour or more, and the third shift crews are even worse. This is understandable, Not to say that structured instruction is inevita- bly counterproductive, not at all. The most effective training is “shoul- der-to-shoulder” out on the shop floor, where the action is and where the problems happen. Another “plus” is that ink suppliers have “seen it all.” Suppli- ers have encountered a wide variety of press, anilox, plate and dryer combina- tions. They may have dealt with a situa- tion that’s new to you.
