Technologies & Techniques Low-Cost, Quality Samples Prototype Packages showcase Value of Metallic ink Ready for something completely different in packag- ing protoyping?” The question is posed by Paul McGovern, national sales manager, Mimaki USA. He maintains that recently introduced Mimaki/JetComp systems open some new opportunities to advance the use of mirror- like metallic effects offered by Eckhart Metalcure inks in flexo printing, particularly flexible packaging. Although the Ink is not new, the use of it in many applications has been ham- pered by the lack of ability to preview its use. Until now, there was no way to proof or prototype this type of mock-up, or comp, prior to press printing. Mimaki incorporates silver, as well as white opaque ink, in its CJV/30 and JV33 Eco-solvent printers, then utilizes Proof- ing Technologies’ JetComp media for packaging prototypes to give the flexo printer or platemaker the ability to quickly prototype the use of mirror-like silver and metallic images for labels, stickers and decals, as well as spot metallizing for poly bags. The prepress prototype was never possible before, TECHNOLOGY TO WATCH Mimaki CJV Print & Cut and JV-33 Series Prototyping Printers • Introduction Date: 2011 • Benefits: Mirror-like silver and metallic effects with comp colors matching flexo press outputs • Impact: Package buyers visualize final product by viewing and holding printed and filled mock-up • Experience: Fast comps and production quality samples • Partners: Eckhart, Proofing Technologies • Watch for: Creative, stunning, brilliant bright colors, particularly on cosmetic packages • 2012 Exhibitions: INFO*FLEX, PACK EXPO, GRAPH EXPO, drupa and NBM Show “ 46 FLeXO january 2012 www.flexography.org Call it a mock-up, comp or production quality sample—this label, applied to a clear bottle, showcases graphic possibilities achievable with white and metallic inks.
