MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 1 SAVE MONEY ON THE POOL CUT YOUR RUNNING COSTS Janita Singh Gas or solar heating can increase the number of days when you and the family can swim in your pool. SUMMER BACKYARD pools are a large part of suburban liv- ing and entertaining. But anyone owning one knows about the commit- ment and cost. Pools require periodic re- filling due to evaporation, chemicals to keep the water clean and power to run, filter and heat them. Luckily, pool owners can make smart choices result- ing in a pool that does not demand much fuss or work. As a result, eco-pools are becoming popular, with many money-saving prod- ucts. Installing a cover, run- ning the filter during off- peak hours and creating or growing windbreaks help with running costs. Energy-efficient pool heating can add to the days a family can use a pool. Another winner is solar heating. Heat pumps are also efficient and consume little energy to operate. Gas efficiently heats to a comfortable temperature at any time. Timers on the pump also help. Filtering in off-peak hours reduces demand for electricity. Pool companies can advise you on environ- mentally friendly cleaning products.
