Home Living : January 24th 2012
MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 3 GARDENS SMALL WITH BIG APPEAL Gardens are becoming smaller. AUSTRALIAN gardens are go- ing through massive transfor- mations, and it's not just be- cause of climate change. Some of the biggest changes are occur- ring due to home and lifestyle trends. Elise Willemsen from Pope Products said: ''Probably the most significant change we see is garden size.'' She said smaller blocks and bigger homes left smaller spaces for gardens. ''And while for many the big yard is a thing of the past, smaller gardens, courtyards and decks can be as attractive, functional and rewarding,'' she said. ''With smaller spaces and an emphasis on outdoor living, consumers are now looking for neat, compact items which can either be easily stored or are stylish enough to have on dis- play.'' GARDENING YOUR DREAM GARDEN CREATE A PRIVATE LANDSCAPE The look of your landscaped garden depends on amount of planning and effort -- such as this classically inspired space. Janita Singh WHILE some people enjoy a simple, small garden with fuss- free blooms, others challenge themselves with elaborately landscaped gardens that say plenty about the gardener and are the envy of neighbours. These days many home- owners opt for professional landscaping -- landscaping gardens yourself can be chal- lenging. But it is achievable. Keeping it simple Most garden designs are based on a theme. It could be about relaxation, your favourite colour, or about one loved plant. It's up to you. What's the focal point? Decide where you most want to draw attention in the garden. Also think about patterns and designs. What do you want your garden to do? Host big family gatherings? Become your pri- vate space? Attract birds and butterflies? Once you've worked this out, put it down on paper. A little goes a long way A fountain, bird bath and sculptures will all give the garden a personal feel. The plants you pick will determine the look. A tropical garden, something fuss-free and low maintenance, a colour scheme or theme -- they all play a part in your landscaped garden design. When all else fails Look through magazines and books specialising in landscap- ing; check out other gardens; talk to someone who has tried this task themselves. Then make a plan and work out details -- from design to cost. 40% 50% 60% OFF! ROLLER SHUTTERS "Don t Be Fooled!"
