MB HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, January 24, 2012 1 SAVE MONEY ON THE POOL SMART CHOICES CAN HELP CUT YOUR RUNNING COSTS Janita Singh Gas or solar heating can increase the number of days when you and the family can swim in your pool. SUMMER BACKYARD pools are a large part of suburban liv- ing and entertaining. But anyone owning one knows about the commit- ment and cost. Pools require periodic re- filling due to evaporation, chemicals to keep the water clean and power to run, filter and heat them. Luckily, pool owners can make smart choices result- ing in a pool that does not demand much fuss or work. As a result, eco-pools are becoming popular, with many money-saving prod- ucts. Installing a cover, run- ning the filter during off- peak hours and creating or growing windbreaks help with running costs. Energy-efficient pool heating can add to the days a family can use a pool. Another winner is solar heating. Heat pumps are also efficient and consume little energy to operate. Gas efficiently heats to a comfortable temperature at any time. Timers on the pump also help. Filtering in off-peak hours reduces demand for electricity. Pool companies can advise you on environ- mentally friendly cleaning products. TIPS TO KEEP CHILDREN OUT OF TROUBLE HERE'S few safety tips from the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of NSW. Supervision: When it comes to young children, constant adult supervision is important. Children should never be left alone. Fence your pool: The NSW Swimming Pools Act requires all swimming pools to be fenced (minimum 1.2m high) with gates that are self- closing and self-latching. It also requires pool owners to display resuscitation charts around pools. Be swim smart: Ensuring children are familiar with water is one of the best investments for parents. In- vest in swim lessons. Safety devices: There are wireless pool alarms that will detect someone entering the pool water and set off an alarm. There are even alarms that can be attached to a child's wrist. Seen any great ideas? Tell us at firstname.lastname@example.org MAKE A COOL STATEMENT Swimming pools today include plunge pools in courtyards, lap pools, living areas built around pools and tropical resort- inspired spas and pools. INSPECTIONS ARE ESSENTIAL Before buying a house inspect its roof condition. Leaky roofs can be expensive and dangerous --- check the roof space for water stains or holes. SMALL BUT EVER SO STYLISH Smaller gardens, courtyards and decks are more alluring, functional and rewarding and have led to great developments in gardening products.
