Home Living : January 31st 2012
MB HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 5 Grow your own POTTY ABOUT ORGANIC VEGIES IF you don't have much space, grow organic vegetables in any containers. All you need is a sunny spot and some care. Pots also allow you to move plants. Use good potting mix and fertiliser. Biodegradable: It's easy to make your own biodegradable pots from paper or cardboard. Cardboard egg cartons are great. Cut each cup into single mini-pots, poke a hole in the bottom to let water drain out, then fill with seed-raising mix and seed. Toilet rolls also work well. Small: The biggest news is that many varieties of fruit trees now come in a miniature variety. So space is no issue. Tea: All sorts of herbs, foliage and flowers from your garden can be used to make herbal tea and easily planted like lemongrass, chamomile and mint. Do your research before you make a tea from a herb to ensure it is safe. Pests: While you're looking on and under leaves for pests, keep an eye out for insect eggs. If you see tiny clusters of eggs, rub them off and stop the problem. GOING ORGANIC ORGANIC THE RIGHT CHOICE GARDENING GURU'S NEW BOOK Janita Singh DIFFERENT CONDITIONS Herbs are a terrific choice for pots. If you're growing more than one type of herb in a pot, don't combine herbs that like different growing conditions. For instance basil likes plenty of water and liquid food but thyme wants drier soil and less feeding. Organic is published by New Holland Publishers, hardback, RRP $35. Don Burke and (inset) his latest book, Organic. CHANGING lifestyles and smar- ter ways of saving the planet and money have also given us many new ways of doing things and new buzz words we come across daily. One of these words is organic. To many this means buying or eating healthily, but there is more to this than picking something from the supermarket shelves. Organic foods are grown and produced without the use of syn- thetic chemicals and fertilisers. And being organic is something everyone can do, explains horti- culturist, author and television personality Don Burke. If you have any bit of land at home, be it a big or tiny backyard, an apartment or terrace, you can go organic very easily. In his latest book, Organic,a guide to growing organic food for your family, Burke explains why it's not only healthy, but a sensible approach to grow your own food. The book looks at sustainable living in small spaces, clever ideas for small backyards, safer pest controls, backyard poultry and much more. ''As a six-year-old kid, I started my own vegie garden. I planted radishes. I remember the superb taste of my first crop and how proud I was when I took some inside and presented this to my family,'' Burke says. ''The fresh vegetables tasted so good but pick- ing them was so much more fun.'' Growing your own food at home can be a very rewarding exercise and in this book Burke shows how this can be done anywhere. Organic is a practical guide with step-by-step instructions, case studies and photos to help you successfully grow your own or- ganic vegetable garden at home. 9938 4377 Showroom 1/9 Powells Rd Brookvale firstname.lastname@example.org supershades.com.au Free All suburbs in home consultation Get the Look Conditions apply.
