Home Living : January 31st 2012
MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, January 31, 2012 1 COLOUR YOUR LIFE PAINT CAN CHANGE MOOD Janita Singh A fresh coat of paint can brighten up any room. BRUSH UP Painting is one of the cheapest way to upgrade any room. Painting can also be a daunting task if you do not do your homework properly. Think about colours, shades, surfaces, location and style of the dwelling. How dramatic do you want the changes to be? When painting outdoors, consider neighbouring buildings and borrow ideas from them. You want your home to look separate and individual without clashing with the neighbour's house. For indoor spaces consider the feel you want in each room. Collect lots of samples from paint shops and compare colours and shades. Many hardware shops have virtual computer programs giving you the option of bringing a picture of your house in and working out which colour suits it best. DECORATING A PAINTING job at home brought me to the realis- ation of how important colours are in our lives. A wrong shade of red in the entry area could be the difference in how visitors at your door see who you are. We are engulfed in colours every day. But have you ever stopped to think of how they work and the role they play in your life? Colours can stop you in your tracks, can make you hungry or prompt you to buy something and they have a huge impact on how you feel. This is the reason why it is so important when choos- ing colours for your home or buying that vibrant lamp or curtains for the room to think carefully. Each colour creates a different mood. You can paint frequently to update the appearance and feel of any room in the house. Warm colours are in the red, orange and yellow part of the spectrum. They speed up our perception of time and produce feelings that are warm, cosy, inviting and associated with excite- ment, warmth and happi- ness. Before embarking on any painting job or buying a new lamp shade, changing your curtains and blinds or adding a vibrantly different cushion, think what mood you want to create in that room. Your painted wall should work in harmony with everything around it.
