ROSEMARIE Jarski has written a modern guide to homemaking, offering all those practical tips our mothers never taught us. Domestic Bliss is Jarski's own unique and witty handbook to fill the gap left by the generation before us. The essential skills of how to keep your house from falling down around your ears are not taught in school, and our parents were so busy earning a living they had no time to pass on the wisdom the world sees as common sense. But according to Jarski, com- mon sense is not so common after all. This hands-on, down-to-earth guide focuses on those household problems and challenges you are most likely to encounter in real life, such as how to cure a dripping tap, combat condensation and un- block a sink. You'll also get to grips with a power drill, a plumb line and a paintbrush, not to mention find- ing the answers to life's little frustrations, such as how to re- move sticky labels, open super- market plastic bags and fit a duvet cover over a duvet without being swallowed. It's a manual for all ages and sexes. With clear and mercifully jargon-free directions, Ms Jarski offers more than tips and nudges, holding your hand through the process of putting up a drywall, shining your shoes, braiding your hair and creating a beautiful table for a dinner party. RRP: $16.95. STORAGE CLOSET TIPS GET your closet organised with tips from Domestic Bliss. Wooden or padded coathangers are preferable to flimsy wire (al- though wire hangers are good for unblocking the vacuum cleaner). If you must use wire hangers, make them non-slip by winding several elastic bands around each end to stop clothes slipping off. Don't hang jackets by the loops as it will distort the shape of shoulders. Hang trousers from the waist rather than over a hanger. Hang skirts from the loops on the waistband. Hang belts from the buckle rather than rolled up. Hang all shirts and skirts together and group according to colour. Group long clothes at one end of the wardrobe and short clothes at the other, so the space below can be used for shelves or drawers. Hang black garments and even- ing dresses inside out to keep them cleaner. Don't fill your wardrobe. Allow air to circulate between clothes Shelves are more practical than drawers. Clothes are more access- ible and less likely to wrinkle. Line drawers and shelves with wallpaper or lining paper and slip in a scented sachet to keep clothes moths at bay. Buy inset drawer dividers so you can keep socks, tights, knick- ers separate. Never store clothes in dryclean- ing plastic bags.
