4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 14, 2012 MB PETS IN PARADISE PET PROJECTS WITH LOVE GARDENS MEET FAMILY NEEDS Janita Singh A backyard garden doesn't have to be large to be pet-friendly PET PROOFING YOUR PAD If your pet spends most of its time indoors, it pays to pet proof your home. Protect sofas and armchairs from scratches and stains by choosing durable fabrics in darker colours and consider buying washable slip covers. Make sure cats have scratching posts so they don't use the furniture or try offering them squares of old carpet to destroy instead of your new lounge. Meanwhile, patterned carpets disguise stains from toileting accidents, or opt for timber or tile floors. Vacuum regularly to get rid of fur and use easily washable low-sheen paints. WE all love our gardens. But if you have a pet at home, consider them before adding anything new to your backyard patch. A great garden is one that creates a perfect balance between the needs of people, pets and plants. The Petcare Information and Advisory Service (PIAS) says our changing lifestyles have resulted in a shift away from the big backyard to smaller spaces, de- signed to accommodate every- thing from productive gardens to play areas and the family dog. And this has resulted in smarter ways to utilise our outdoor space to cater for the family and the pet. Pet owners are also moving away from the idea that you need a big backyard to be able to care for a pet. PIAS research shows that around 60 per cent of pet owners say that their pet spent either more or equal amounts of time indoors as outdoors. Only 12 per cent of pet owners in high density areas said that not having some regular access to a secure outdoor space was an issue for them. The research pointed out that a growing number of people living in high density or high rise accom- modation are simply finding in- novative ways to create a garden environment that is pet-friendly, even if it is a small balcony. OUTDOORS AREA MUST BE SECURE CREATING the perfect pet/ plant balance: The outdoor activities of your pet will vary depending on what type of animal it is, what breed and age. Be prepared to have plans in place for the active infant stage, knowing you can relax more in the placid later years; All outdoor areas should be secure. For dogs this includes fencing that can't be jumped over or dug under. Cats can be kept secure in an enclosure that allows them to enjoy the fresh air without leaving your property; Grass areas are a great option in a small outdoor area; Section off a separate area of your garden for pet toileting and cover it with gravel or wood chips; Many common garden plants are toxic to cats and dogs. Your local nursery can advise you; Dogs love to dig and even cats can damage garden beds. You can surround the garden bed with a strong hedge or raise it to a level that your dog can't reach.
