4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 MB CONSUMER RIGHTS DISSATISFIED GENERATION INCREASING ENERGY GOES INTO COMPLAINTS Household electrical and gas products and whitegoods and solar PV panels (inset) were the top subject for complaints by NSW consumers last year. Janita Singh People want what they paid for. The Australian Consumer Law provides consumers with guarantees that reinforce these expectations. Fair Trading Minister Anthony Roberts HOUSEHOLD electrical and gas products and whitegoods were the number one subject of com- plaints by NSW consumers to Fair Trading last year. This was closely followed by those related to house construc- tion. Fair Trading Minister An- thony Roberts said the agency received more than 42,500 complaints in 2011, up from 41,811 in 2010. Fair Trading received 2611 complaints about electrical and gas products and whitegoods in 2011, with defective or unsatis- factory goods, repairs and main- tenance and refunds the most common problems. ''These figures highlight the importance of a national project currently conducted by NSW Fair Trading, which is checking to see if whitegoods and elec- tronics retailers are complying with consumer guarantee re- quirements under the Aust- ralian Consumer Law,'' he said. Mr Roberts said research showed Australians are un- happy with outcomes when faced with defective white goods and electronic goods. He said some retailers shir- ked their obligations and left consumers to sort out the prob- lem on their own and at their own expense. Complaints about solar PV panels was another concern. ''Solar complaints reflect problems generated by govern- ment schemes which are poorly managed ... Consumer detri- ment is often the consequence of dodgy merchants racing to capi- talise on inflated public demand generated by rushed or ill- conceived schemes,'' he said. ''Consumers need to do their homework before entering into any agreement and should only use licensed electricians to do solar installations. Check they use products that meet Aust- ralian standards." Mr Roberts said the major issue raised by consumers re- mained the same. ''People want what they paid for. The Australian Consumer Law provides consumers with guarantees that reinforce these expectations,'' he said.
