MB HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 7 INTERIOR DECORATING NOSTALGIC NEW TRENDS EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Janita Singh Patterns and colours with a global or tribal theme are becoming quite popular. THERE are many things you can do to achieve that perfect look. Using colours, a particular theme, the proper furniture and various decorative elements and items, you can give your house that extra character. Maybe it's the economy, the housing crunch, or perhaps it's the environmental push, but 2012 is seeing the release of a range of new colours for interior decorating that are even more exciting than previous offerings. Economic stress has people nos- talgic for times past. Thus the colours of 2012 are likely to have an aged, heirloom quality to them, and should be applied with dis- tressed or antique finishes. Look for aged greens, smoky blues and earthy browns in paint and fabric, signs of past decor styles but also connections to the global environmental movement. Patterns and colours with a global or tribal theme are becom- ing quite popular. These include African, Native American and Aboriginal designs and patterns in everything from dinnerware and drapery to bold geometric rugs and area rugs. A new awareness that life's most important aspects aren't related to money has spurred people to sim- plify their lives. This is reflected in a preference for a neutral palette based on varied tones of grey and white. Today home decorating trends are all about going back to nature and enjoying simplicity. GARDENING VICTA SPOILS FOR DARRYL THE auction for Victa's historic eight millionth mower (pictured) has ended with its sale for $6301 via Quicksales.com.au The collector's item is in for a charmed life after fetching what is thought to be a world record price for a push mower. There were more than 178 bids from 21 bidders, with Darryl Por- ter from Bob Greene Auto in Armidale placing the winning bid. Not only is Darryl a lifelong Victa tragic but he's considered to be one of the brand's best dealers. Mr Porter said Victa had been such a big part of his life for so many years that he was honoured to own such a milestone mower. The new mower is also taking pride of place in lodgings unfam- iliar to the average push mower. ''The 8-Millionth Victa lawn- mower is going to become a staple feature in my dining room,'' he said. ''I can't wait to show off this trophy to all my friends and family. It's such a beauty.'' All proceeds from the auction will go to the RSPCA. EARTH FRIENDLY THE earth-friendly movement is fuelling the trend towards repurposed and recycled furniture and accessories. Home decorators are realising that they can help protect the earth by reusing, repainting and refinishing furnishings. Likewise, the trend towards decor styles that use furniture in its original, distressed finishes. There's a greater desire to revisit the past. V Supply dumper bin to be placed on site.
