6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, February 21, 2012 MB PAINTING JOINING THE RUST BELT BRING COLOUR AND WARMTH Janita Singh BORAL DIY TIPS Practise your application technique on a spare piece of board. Work in an area of about one square metre at a time, making sure to cover the entire surface. Make sure only one person does the painting for a consistent effect. The rust effect can add style and warmth outside. It is also great on inside feature walls. BRING out the warmth of the season with something rustic. Make a statement with the latest trend that provides a gorgeous and original rust effect -- perfect for feature walls inside and outside. The rust effect compliments neutral shades of cream, white, nudes, beiges and mushroom tones and picks out the darker timbers of wooden flooring, panel- ing and furniture. Here's an easy step-by-step guide to achieve the wow factor. Things you will need: Rust base paint; rust solution; drop sheet; Paint stirrer, variety of wide (100ml) synthetic brushes, and a roller; clean containers and a roller tray; Scotch Blue Pain- ters tape; spray bottle filled with water; overalls, safety goggles and impervious gloves (for applying rust solution); water-based clear coat; spare piece of board for practising application technique. Step 1: Shake well and pour paint rust base paint into a clean dry container. Mask off anything that could get painted over on your chosen feature wall and begin cutting in. Apply two coats with a wide brush. Allow a mini- mum of 12 hours drying time between coats. Step 2: You should wear overalls, impervious gloves, and chemical safety gloves. Make sure the area is well ventilated. Once rust base paint is completely dry, apply two coats of rust solution with a wide brush and random brush-strokes. Allow at least eight hours drying time between coats. Step 3: Clear coat (optional) Finish with a suitable water-based clear coat. Step 4: Cleaning up Clean up your paint brushes using water.
