(MCC), a global leader in deliver- ing label solutions for prominent brands in the areas of home and personal care, wines and spirits, food and beverages, pharmaceuticals and specialty consumer products. In addi- tion to shrink sleeves, MCC also supplies pressure sensitive, cut and stack, heat transfer and in-mold labeling solutions for its customers. Brand owners are drawn to shrink sleeves because they allow their products to stand out on grocery store shelves crowded with an increasing number of options. The expand- ed use of the real estate on the bottle or can---360 degree graphics within the printable label area, as well as the bold graphics that can be applied---offer the eye catching appeal brands are looking for to grab customers' attention. BANG FOR BUCK "It gives brand owners more bang for their buck in terms of real estate; more area that they can put graphics on," says Calvert. "With pressure sensitive labels you can only put graphics on a certain area of the bottle. With shrink sleeves, you can use the whole bottle for the graphics, not just a por- tion of it." Growth in value-added premium products, as well in the dairy and dairy-product related markets---milk, flavored milk, yogurts and drinkable yogurts---have led to the increase in the use of shrink sleeves. The variety of container shapes is also helping drive shrink sleeve use. Shrink sleeve labels take on the complete contour of the container, from top to bottom, and can be used on virtually any container type or shape. "We are seeing everything from oval bottle shapes to hour- glass and pyramid," notes Calvert. Shrink sleeves are also practical---providing exceptional durability as well as scuff, tear and tamper resistance. They can also be used as an overwrap for convenient multi-pack promotions. INNOVATION ABOUNDS MCC has used shrink sleeves for toothbrush handles, bev- erages, homecare products, motor oil products, mayonnaise jars and detergents. The Batavia, OH-based company is well known for its innovative shrink sleeve offerings. It has used shrink sleeves to simulate frosted glass, by creating a pattern varnish that is either surface or reverse printed. MCC's line of thermochromic inks is able to indicate varying degrees of heat or cold---a big sell in beer decorations. MCC Shrink Sleeve Decorated Caps® give brand owners yet another new area where graphics can be applied to a container. Shrink sleeves do have their disadvantages, particularly in the manufacturing process, which can be complex and labor-intensive. But that, too, is being erased, as advances in materials, printing/converting technologies and applications are allowing more efficiencies and ease during manufactur- ing.
