6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, February 28, 2012 MB DIY FLOORING TRICKS TO HELP IT CLICK DIY FLOORING ALL COVERED Janita Singh Achieve top results when laying wooden and laminate floors. TOP TIPS Laying wooden and laminate floors is easier than you think. Many floors come in easy DIY forms and you just have to pay attention to a few things to get them installed, say floor experts at Bosch Power Tools. Before a floor covering can be laid, the subfloor has to be prepared accordingly. Floors in old buildings often have to be covered with underlayment panels in order to achieve a good subfloor. A new floor covering should be used as an opportunity to generally improve the floor structure if necessary. TIPS from Bosch Power Tools: Laying parquet and laminate involves using tongues and grooves, which are glued together (the glueless version with a click system is easier). Parquet and laminate naturally expand and shrink. This is why edge joints (at least 10mm) must be taken into consideration. Always lay in the direction of light. Start the first row in the left- hand corner of the room with the groove side facing the wall. Mount the spacers to the wall, so the expansion joint is maintained. The last board of the first row usually has to be shortened. Offcut from the first row is used to start the next one. Lay the subsequent rows of boards. If working without a click system, use a hammer and tapping block to join the elements togeth- er. The width of the last row has to be adjusted to fit the form of the wall. Only then can it be glued and inserted using a pull bar. Fix everything with wooden wedges. The glue should set for at least one night. FLOOR COVERINGS SELECTION MORE THAN THE COST FLOOR coverings can be divided into two categories: textile and non-textile coverings. Textile coverings include car- pet, needle fleece as well as woven and knitted rugs. Non-textile coverings are divided into three different groups: Elastic coverings (e.g. PVC, linoleum, cork), hard coverings (laminate, prefabri- cated parquet, floorboards and wooden floors) and mineral cover- ings (natural stones, Terrazzo, tiles). Selecting a floor covering is often not only a question of money, it depends where the floor is to be laid. Laminate floors, tiles or linoleum are very well suited to kitchens and workrooms. Lin- oleum has the advantage that it is both warm to your feet and repel- lent to mould. Tiles, marble and natural stones are recommended for bath- rooms and showers. Natural stones are something special -- each plate is unique. Fine ceramic plates and tiles are a mixture of quartz, clay and feldspar.
