MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, March 6, 2012 5 HOMEGROWN MAKING HERBS PICK OF BUNCH MOST gardeners are out in force during autumn working on herb gardens to prepare their supplies for the year. You can grow a herb garden in a window box or a designated patch in a big garden. Herbs grown in flower gardens also often provide some pest control. Herbs are among the easiest plants to grow when given the appropriate environment. Choose a planting site where herbs will thrive rather than just survive. Herbs are adapt- able to a wide range of soil and growing conditions, however many do not grow well in poorly drained soil and will quickly die in a wet site. There are some special chal- lenges to growing herbs in Aust- ralia, including the heat, hu- midity and soil. So it pays to do some research. GETTING INTO THE GARDEN AUTUMN GARDENS TIPS FROM AN EXPERT Perfect time to plant spring-flowering bulbs. THE FACT SHEET Vegetable gardens are back in fashion. Many types of fruit and vegetables can be grown in pots, a designated vegie patch or even in the flower garden. When buying a plant you haven't grown before, always read the instructions. AUTUMN is a busy month for gardeners. The garden is full of flowers and vegetables still growing strong and the heat of summer has lost its sting mak- ing it the perfect time to try planting something new. Yates gardening expert Judy Horton says a few basic garden- ing chores need to be handled first and provides some tips on getting your autumn garden growing. Autumn vegetables and herbs: Sow seeds of broad beans, lettuce, onions, peas, rad- ishes, spinach and turnips. Par- sley needs to be planted in a cooler area or in a pot. Lawn watch: It's also time to feed the lawns. Invest in a good lawn lifter or feed. The soil in lawns can become compacted during wet weather, weakening the grass. Aerate lawns with a garden fork. Watch for grass- munching lawn grubs and black beetles. Flowers to sow: This is the perfect time to plant spring- flowering bulbs. For a stunning spring display, plant jonquils. In warmer areas, the golden rule is to buy early and plant late. Sow seeds of sweet peas, poppies, pansies, columbines, paper daisies and dianthus. Garden chores: Other jobs should include removing excess buds from camellias. Autumn is a good season for transplanting evergreen shrubs and small trees. Cuttings: There's still time to take cuttings of shrubs and produce some new plants. Bld.
