HOME MAINTENANCE GO WITH THE FLOW GIVE YOUR KITCHEN A HAND It pays to keep an eye out for leaks and other small maintenance problems in the kitchen. Janita Singh DOING small maintenance jobs regularly can add years to your kitchen. That's the message from TV presenter, builder and author Luke Van Dyck. ''If your kitchen sink tap is leaking, you often do not need to replace the entire tap,'' he said. ''It's just a matter of replacing the washers.'' Here are some common kitchen problems and Luke's tips on fixing them without breaking your budget. Problem: Kitchen cupboard doors becoming loose. Solution: Get out the screw- drivers. It's most likely a matter of tightening the hinge. Problem: Leaking kitchen sink. Solution: Must be attended to as soon as possible otherwise it will damage the structure be- cause the timber will soak up the water, expand and fall apart. It's simply a matter of unscrew- ing the items and replacing them. Make sure you fit all the rubber O-rings in the pipes before you screw them back up. When doing the plug and waste, put the rubber gaskets in place then tighten up. Problem: Cracks around the bench top and splashback. Solution: Scrape out the old grout and vacuum the joint. Refill the grout between the bench top and splash back with a mould-resistant neutral cure silicone. To do this, mask up the bench top and tiles to protect from excess silicone. Squeeze into joint, then spray soapy water over it and remove excess with a stick or your finger. Remove tape and re-spray with soapy water, then run your finger over it once more. MB HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 13, 2012 3 RENOVATE EASY WAY Important to plan your kitchen. YOUR kitchen needs to stand up to lots of wear and tear. It may also date and it's likely that even with all the right care and maintenance, it will need renovating at some time. For the project to run smoothly, have all your major cost items like the sink, taps, dishwasher, oven, cooktop, mi- crowave and fridge selected and all codes and model numbers available to the kitchen com- pany before they start building. That way the kitchen com- pany will have all the dimen- sions of the appliances and it will fit perfectly into the space available the first time. ''I can't tell you how many times cabinets have been taken back to the factory to accommo- date an appliance,'' Luke Van Dyck said. ''It's also important to plan and be realistic about the timeline.''
