Home Living : March 13th 2012
MB HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, March 13, 2012 1 IF YOU CAN STAND HEAT GET IN TO THE KITCHEN Janita Singh The kitchen is the most important room in the house. POSSIBILITIES Lack of space should not limit the big possibilities offered by a great kitchen. There are many clever ways to find somewhere to put everything you need and have lots of storage even if space is limited. In a small kitchen design, good storage means making the most of that tucked away space by using overhead space for cupboards, buying appliances which are small and compact and using smart colours to give a feeling of openness. Simple benchtops work best. And any designs which hide everything in cupboards and store things out of sight will make a small kitchen look much more spacious. Use all the space in the pantry. There are several options for internal cupboard storage, including drawers and shelves that slide out. KITCHENS A well-designed kitchen ma- kes life so much easier and raises the value of your home. If you're looking at re- modelling, renovating or simply putting in a whole new kitchen, it pays to do some research. Get the family in- volved: Ask every member what they would like in the kitchen, what their frus- trations are with the space and changes they would like to see. Money matters: Work- ing out a budget should be one of the first things you do. Do you have the skills to DIY or do you need pro- fessional help? Do you want to tackle the whole project at once or work in stages? Are you ready to recycle some existing materials and re-use or is this a complete knock-down and rebuild project? Determine design: Once you know how every- one feels, work out what will best suit the space you have allocated. Kitchens are as individual as people. There is a design out there to suit your needs and budget, from single wall designs to U-shapes and L-shapes. Seen any great ideas? Tell us at email@example.com NEW COAT OF LIFE Fresh stain is the most cost effective and simple way to update your deck. Prepare by sanding cracked or splintered wood then scrub it clean. For a streak-free finish, stain in the direction of the boards. GET READY FOR WINTER Autumn means getting your garden in shape. Clean and sharpen tools, get the gloves out, trim trees and clear garden rubbish. Check and clean the swimming pool for the coming cooler months. NEW TREND IN HOME DESIGN Multi-purpose rooms are continuing to prove popular. Kitchen and dining is combined using high bench dining options, while living, study and play rooms are appearing in many combinations. *Discounts off R.R.P. on selected ranges only.
