2 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 20, 2012 MB ENVIRONMENT SWITCH TO GREEN MAKE YOUR KITCHEN ECO-FRIENDLY Look for ways to make your kitchen a green environment. FLOORED Choose renewable materials Make environmentally sustainable choices for your kitchen. For timber floors that do not cost the earth, consider fast-growing cork, bamboo or plantation timbers, and for a marble look that is not only greener, but much cheaper, check out new products like marmoleum, which are made from natural, readily available, renewable materials. WHEN it comes to being green, do not stop at your kitchen. There are many eco-friendly ideas for transforming your kitchen into a green haven. Think green appliances Today's kitchen appliances mostly come with an energy- saving rating so look out for the energy-saving stars. Choose water-saving taps instead of normal ones. Buy smart ovens, like convection, which use a fan to drive heat rapidly from source to food so it cooks it faster than a conventional oven. Remember recycling Many kitchens feature recycl- ing stations. It is easy to create a recycling station to put things which can be recycled and reu- sed or serve best as compost. Remodel and reuse When replacing things in your kitchen, first think of how they might be reused. Old benchtops can be given a new life with re-painting or staining. Instead of buying new counters, get second-hand ones cheaper. They may take a little more effort to source, but recycled fittings and materials make for not only an eco-friendly kitchen, but a unique one too. Look around salvage yards and auction houses for everything from appliances to cabinets. Let there be light Apart from choosing energy- saving light globes, make sure you incorporate as much natu- ral light into your kitchen de- sign as possible, including sky- lights if necessary. Ideally you should be able to work in your kitchen during the day without switching on a light. Try using fluorescents which cut energy use by almost half and painting the walls a light colour.
