4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, March 27, 2012 MB KITCHEN FLOORS BEAUTY OF WOOD TIMBER LOOK JUST CAN'T BE BEAT' Native hardwoods are recommended for use as kitchen flooring. Janita Singh BECAUSE kitchens are often incorporated into a home's open-plan living area, flooring needs to be versatile. Timber floors in lounge and kitchen areas are an option because they not only unite the whole, but allow for the natural beauty of the timber grain and colour to be given a decent sweep of floor space. But how well does a timber floor hold up in the kitchen, an area noticeably prone to a lot of wear and tear? Sydney Flooring founder Bill Durkowyak, who has more than 50 years experience laying timber floors, says the best timber in a kitchen is a native hardwood such as blackbutt, brushbox, Sydney blue gum, spotted gum or jarrah. ''These timbers are ex- tremely hardy,'' Durkowyak says. ''They can't be damaged eas- ily and, once sanded and fin- ished with an appropriate product, are very easy to clean.'' Whether a kitchen is classic or modern in design, a native hardwood floor will generally offset the cabinetry and bench- top favourably and provide a warm textural contrast to pol- ished or flat kitchen surfaces. Consider the distinctive grain of Victorian ash teamed with all-white polyurethane cabinetry, or the deep red of jarrah complementing cupboards painted cornflower blue. Recycled and distressed tim- bers work best in an industrial setting, especially under stain- less steel or antique benches. Solid hardwood timber floor- ing will last. It can be sanded down and resurfaced every five to seven years. ''To clean and maintain tim- ber floors, use an anti-static dust control mop for sweep- ing,'' Durkowyak says. NEVER OUT OF FASHION Hardwood adds value THE advantages of hardwood kitchen floors include: Adds value From rustic timbers to sleek blond options, the warmth and beauty of a natural timber floor never goes out of fashion. Easy to clean, maintain Spillages can be simply wi- ped away and solid floorboards can be resurfaced every five to 10 years, with fresh sealing coats applied to make the floor look new again. More forgiving Timber floors are not just durable, they also absorb more noise and are far softer and warmer than harder kitchen-floor alternatives, such as tile and concrete. This makes them a superior choice for people who spend long periods of time standing and cooking in the kitchen. $ON T PAY RETAIL BUY DIRECT m!S SEEN IN (OME "EAUTIFULn COMPARE OUR PRICES!
