Home Living : April 3rd 2012
4 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, April 3, 2012 MB FUN FOR KIDS GROW YOUR OWN WORMS Worms love kitchen scraps. KIDS love worms so creating a worm farm to turn kitchen scraps into compost will be a winner these school holidays. A worm farm can be any container -- foam boxes from a greengrocer or a supermarket are best as they are waterproof. Make holes in the bottom of one box to let liquid drain. Place box with holes over another box without holes or make a tap in the bottom box. Put leaves or paper to make a layer and soak it. Add the worms. You can buy compost worms from recycling centres or nurseries. Add food waste regularly. Cover the worm bed with newspaper to help keep a con- stant temperature. Place the lid of the box on top. Place worm farm in a cool and shady spot in your garden or garage; water when dry. CHILDREN IN THE GARDEN LITTLE GREEN THUMBS SUSTAINABLE GARDENING FOR KIDS Let kids build a mini herb, vegetable or flower garden for them to look after. Children love watching the plants grow. Details: bunnings.com.au Janita Singh COMBINE fun and learning for children by having some fun with these eco-friendly projects during the school holidays. A sustainable garden project not only keeps the garden alive but teaches kids eco-friendly practices. Bunnings Garden- care buyer, Sharyn Pertzela, says we can make gardening fun by letting kids create their own projects in the garden. ''It's a healthy way to let kids have fun over the holidays while keeping them off the couch and com- puter,'' she said. ''Make gardening fun by let- ting them create their own project. Building a worm farm is an easy project and will keep kids busy for hours.'' (See column at right). She also suggests creating a mini herb, vegetable or flower garden that kids can look after. ''Children will love watching the plants grow and gain a sense of achievement,'' she said. During school holidays, Bunnings will run workshops, designed specifically for the children.
