Home Living : April 3rd 2012
4 HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, April 3, 2012 MB EGGS GALORE EGG-CELLENT DECOR CENTREPIECE FOR EASTER Janita Singh All you need is a boiled egg and some basic creativity. INSTEAD of scrambling, poaching or frying your eggs, why not paint them. The Easter bunny is ready for his rounds but before you gorge on oh-so-many chocolate eggs, why not decorate a few hard-boiled ones instead and get your home ready for the Easter celebrations? You'll need some eggs, basic items and ingredients from the pantry to decorate and some creativity. Painting and colouring your eggs is simple. Boil your eggs until they are hard then leave aside to cool and dry. If you're doing this activity with children, it's probably best to cover the work surface with some news- paper to avoid mess. There are many ways to colour your eggs. If you're planning to keep your painted eggs edible, then it's best to use food colouring rather than acrylic paint. To make the dye, take whatever food colouring you want to use and measure a 1/4 teaspoon of each one into a small bowl. Add 3/4 of a cup of hot water and one tablespoon of white vinegar for each colour that you've used and stir. This can then be used to paint in whatever designs you wish. Allow it to dry. It's best to use an egg stand to keep it steady. Many natural products can be used as dye such as brewed tea, berries, pomegranate extract, beet- root juice, coffee, red wine and grape juice. Dye kits are available or you can use stencils and stickers. Wax crayons are another way to get creative as well as hand painting. Try wrapping a piece of lace or ribbon around the eggs and, if all else fails, cover in coloured foil. Put your newly decorated eggs into a basket, spread them around the house or make them centre- piece of your entertainment table and you've got some egg-cellent Easter decoration. Now you can create a golden display of painted eggs with a new product released by Rust-Oleum Universal All- Surface spray paint. What you need Rust-Oleum Universal Met- allic pure gold spray paint, newspaper/dust sheets, cloth, wooden skewers, modelling clay, styrofoam or a bucket of sand, blown eggs How to do it: 1: Cover a well-ventilated area with newspapers or drop sheets. Wipe the eggs to make sure they clean. 2: When the eggs are ready, place the pointed end of a skewer in the hole at the base. Stand the skewer upright in modelling clay, styrofoam or sand. This will allow access to the entire surface of the egg, reducing the risk of smudging or finger marks. 3: Always follow the instruc- tions on the back of the spray can. 4: Hold the can about 30cm from the surface of the eggs and spray in a steady back and forth motion, slightly overlapping with each stroke. Keep the can the same distance from the surface and in motion.
