Home Living : April 10th 2012
MB HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 3 HEALTHY LIVING RELAX AND UNWIND Hitting the spot . . . an area to relax and unwind at home. PEOPLE WANT TO CREATE A QUIET SPOT' Janita Singh NATURAL light, fresh air, noise control and insulation are some of the most important features for Australian home buyers and renovators. Well-designed smaller and smarter sustainable homes are more popular, says Archicentre, the building advisory service of the Australian Institute of Ar- chitects. Archicentre Queensland man- ager Ian Agnew said over the past two decades the family home had grown in size. But the need to keep construc- tion and running costs under control meant that for many entering the housing market, small had become beautiful. ''One of the misconceptions for people to overcome is that a small home is a mean home, or is of lower quality,'' he said. ''But a well-designed small home can maximise the use of space to deliver a pleasant, healthy living environment to suit people's lifestyle. ''Not everyone wants to live in an apartment and the solution is for a smaller, smarter, more sustainable home," he said. Key issues during design con- sultation include health, lifesty- le and increasingly sustain- ability courtesy of skyrocketing energy and water costs. ''The noise factor has also become a major consideration with double glazing and sound proofing becoming a high pri- ority for renovators and home builders who want to ensure peace within their home en- vironment and cut out traffic noise," Mr Agnew said. ''People want to create a quiet spot where they can relax and unwind,'' he said. According to Archicentre, the typical renovation includes a main bedroom with an ensuite and walk-in wardrobe at one end of the house and at the other end, a multipurpose living area. THE TOP TRENDS Decking for informal living area. PERIOD homes with little light are being transformed through atrium-type exten- sions which provide more natural sunlight and viewing areas of gardens or water features. Internal courtyards are be- ing used to provide private, green viewing areas from many parts of the home. Fitness-conscious baby boomers and young pro- fessionals keen on maintain- ing fitness are including small home gyms, spas and lap pools, which are suitable for smaller housing lots. The quality of air and the control of temperature in the the home has also led to the return of the traditional louvre window. Integrating landscaped outdoor areas into informal living areas with the in- clusion of walls of folding glass doors and decks.
