Home Living : April 10th 2012
6 HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, April 10, 2012 MB HOME TREND CREATING KASBAH AMBIENCE HOW TO SOUK IT UP AT HOME Susan Redman Be inspired by Moroccan design, with these mosaic tables, lanterns, ceramic tagines and iron chairs and screens all from Metroscope. SOME would think that interior designers' love affair with exotic Eastern and Middle Eastern styles might be starting to wane, but what's been happening lately is a revamping of 'ethnic' trends. Extending the aesthetics of this intrinsically rich approach to in- terior design, decorators have ap- plied the look to new rooms in the home, including outdoor enter- tainment areas. They have also been integrating vintage discoveries with new fab- rications and materials, and even a pastiche of elements, from tiles to textiles. Here are five great ideas to get the look: Carve it up Fine fretwork is distinctly Mid- dle Eastern. Install a wooden fra- med vintage window on the wall for an artwork or a finely tooled and decorated wooden or silver framed mirror. Metallic finish Display shiny, reflective feature homewares such as large platters made from etched and beaten silver, bronze lanterns and tealights or copper lamps. Go geometric From tiles in the bathroom to large pavers outdoors, choose colourful geometric patterns, es- pecially those with cobalt blue, a favourite chroma on mosque domes. Earthy textiles From blood red dhurries to ochre-coloured earthenware and dusty olive green and jewel- inspired turquoise, choose vivid colours that reflect a fascination with life in the Middle East. Modern mosaics Especially attractive in paving but equally good-looking in the bathroom, rustic handmade or crafted tiles fitted together in a mosaic pattern add charm to chill- out spaces and courtyards. DECOR MEDINA MOOD LIGHTING IDEAS Silver Streak lantern from Metroscope. LIGHTING THE WAY A great way to introduce an exotic element into any room's decor is to set the mood with lighting. Here are some options: Kasbah Candles Arrange groups of low lights in your home with scented rosewater candles, or candles infused with other traditional perfumes of the Middle East, such as sandalwood. Arabian Tealights Pretty tealights that have a Middle Eastern appeal are often in jewell-coloured glass or printed with delicately patterned prints, in silver or gold ink, depicting stylised natural forms. Shadow Play Multi-stained glass panelled lan- terns coloured with emerald, in- digo, amber and ruby panes, trans- form any room. While they are not suitable for work areas, these traditional light fittings and shades are perfect for living areas and bedrooms.
