THECOMPETITION PhoenixChallenge2012pitted schoolsagainstonean- otherwithonegoal:toseewhocancreatethebestjobwith a limitedamountofresources.Judging forthefifthannual event,washeldinSanAntonio,TX,during Foundationof FlexographicTechnicalAssociation’s AnnualForumand INFO*FLEXExhibitioninMarch. For2012,thestudents’ missionwastodesigncustom brandingofnarrowweb,flexographicallyprintedlabelsand/ orpackagestobeused forsnackfooditemstobesoldin collegeconveniencestores.Studentssubmitted twotofour labelsand/orpackagingitems.Theywerelimitedtofour stationsand noprocesscolors—onlyspotcolors.Fifty-one studentsfromeightschoolsproduced labels,packagesand presentationsforsnackstobeconsideredbysevenjudges. Thepresentations,visionand marketplanswerethen judgedbyfourcriteria:overallquality,conceptandgraphics, research,and execution.Industryspecialistsevaluatedthe workofeachschool’steam.Scoringwasbasedonallthe criticalstepsinlabelmaking:prepress,platemaking,printing skillsandbasictheory.Workwascompletedoverthecourse ofafullcollegesemester.
