FLEXO Magazine : April 2012
Gary Hilliard, Hood Packaging, exclaimed, “Give us a chance to show you what we can do! Orange, green, violet, blue—let us add color to help a product’s appeal” He advised listeners to, “Design for the process. Capitalize on every opportunity to suggest doing things a little differently. Deliver eco- nomical benefits.” Robb Frimming of Schawk indicated that it is possible to “harmonize” or minimize colors and be quite success- ful. Among real world examples he cited, Herbal Essence, which took 24 spot colors down to nine. Bounty took 36 colors down to five. Pampers brought 50 colors down to 12. And Charmin cut 16 colors down to seven. The packages, and they were displayed on screen, were seen as delivering high quality product at best possible cost. Kelly Owens, Kaytee, stepped up and showcased actual real-world flexo prod- ucts. “ We have 800 high profile skus. We’re leveraging four color and spot designs. The challenge is to get color to pop at retail. Designers don’t always understand the nuances of flexo. That’s nothing new. Flexographers have been dummying it down for years. Today, however, expanded gamut’s impact at shelf is just incredible. “ We no longer dummy down de- signs,” she stressed. “Instead, we add drop shadows, gradations, fall-offs, screens, etc. Thanks to flexo’s evolution. There are no limitations anymore to be- ing able to design a package.” best of the best Continued from page 21...
