FLEXO Magazine : April 2012
Sustainable, Solventless Solutions BASF, Hall 11, Stand E-43, will highlight its sustainable approach to the converting world by presenting its solutions for water‐based printing inks, lamination adhesives and biodegradable films for flexible packaging. For instance, recently, the firm introduced the water based Joncryl® FLX line and is committed to drive the conversion to solvent-free technologies in the printing and packaging industry. The Joncryl FLX Line has been developed to fulfill the needs of converters involved in printing non-absorbing substrates like PE, OPP and PET. Other sustainable solutions from BASF to the flexible packaging industry are Ecovio, a biodegradable and compostable film that partly consists of renew- able raw materials, and Epotal Eco, a water-based biodegradable lamination adhesive. These new products offer the ink formulator an opportunity to prepare water-based printing inks that fulfill many demands of the flexible packaging market. The different products all have their own benefits and together they cover a broad range of properties needed to print film for flexible packaging. These products fulfill the market demands for high resistance properties in combination with good printability at the press. For reverse print and lamination jobs, there are Joncryl FLX products available that give high lamination bond strength in film structures like OPP/PE and PET/PE in combination with very good printability at the press. The common property of interest for an ink maker and a film printer of the Joncryl FLX Line is an excellent resolubility/resistance bal- ance. This balance is the key for success. BASF also offers a new generation of adhesive raw material for the packaging industry. Epotal® Eco is water-based and meets the requirements of the European standard for biodegradable plastics. Apart from its compostability, Epotal Eco is the environmentally friendly and efficient alternative to solvent-based and solvent-free products. It is free from toxic components and suitable for food packaging. In addition, multi-layer films, which are produced with the help of Epotal Eco, can be processed immediately without curing for a longer period of time. This will help everyone in the packaging industry to save time and money. BASF offers biodegradable materials to produce flexible films for packaging. Ecovio® is based largely on renewable raw materials and is biodegradable and compostable according to DIN EN 13432 (requirements for packaging recover- able through composting and biodegradation) under the conditions in an industrial composting site. Films have high strength, stiffness and puncture resistance and are approved for use in food packaging. The BASF pigments, known under the trade names Irgalite®, Paliotol®, Cromophtal®, Heliogen®, are pigments suitable for biodegradable/compostable printing inks. They are metal- and azo-free pigments and suitable for aqueous, solvent based and UV curing ink systems. They are covering the whole color space. Fast & Flexible Solventless Laminators Nordmeccanica, the multinational coating and laminating machinery manufacturer, will have a substantial presence at drupa. In Hall 15, Stand B-42, it will showcase its Duplex SL HD--the fastest solventless laminator in the industry. Daily demonstrations are scheduled for 12:30, 2:30 and 4:30 pm. In conjunction with drupa, at the Nordmec- canica Headquarter, in Pia- cenza Italy, a showroom will display every major product featured by the company, starting with the world‘s most-sold family of lamina- tors: “Simplex.“ Guests will witness a demonstration of Nordmeccanica’s “One Shot Three MATIC. ” T he machine is sold to, and demonstrated courtesy: Berry Plastics USA. One Shot Three represents an uttermost advance in terms of flexibility for three- ply, solventless lamination. To complete your drupa experience and include the visit at the Nordmec- canica Showroom, please contact Nordmeccanica NA at 631-242-9898 , firstname.lastname@example.org. 64 FLEXO april 2012 www.flexography.org
