MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, April 17, 2012 1 HIDDEN TREASURE THE HUNT FOR VINTAGE GOLD Susan Redman Make an offer at an auction house or antique market for a quick sale. OLD WARES WHAT IS it about the vintage look that attracts us? Is it simply about displaying pieces that resonate with history? Or is it the lure of fossicking around a junk shop or being first on the scene at a local garage sale? To bag the best treasure, try some of the following strategies. Granny Chic: Next time you visit your grandparents, ask to buy some of their old wares. Down in the basement, stored in the garage, banished under the bed or stacked in the laundry press -- you'd be surprised to find what's been put away for safe keeping. From embroidered tablecloths and quilted bedspreads to original '50s furniture and funky light fittings, these heirlooms will have a senti- mental back story to them that is priceless. Junkyard Jamboree: If the Pickers Sisters on TV hasn't got you visiting your local junkyard yet, you're missing out, especially if you love industrial style. Junk- yards store all sorts of great objects ripe for restoration. Rust- ed metal chairs and tables look great outdoors, or give them a sealing coat and bring them in- side. Add new upholstery for cush- ions. Trash 'n' treasure: Every weekend across Sydney there are fabulous finds stacked up in flea markets from Bondi to Bank- stown. Look for homewares in good nick and barter. You won't find the best bounty on the tables of regular stallholders, but in the stalls of casual sellers having a clean-out. Be advised -- regulars pick over these stalls as soon as they set up, so arrive early. Internet and online auctions: From an upholstered velvet bed- head from the '50s to shaker-style kitchen chairs, the trick to nab- bing a special piece at online auctions or second-hand sales sites is to program the site to send alerts. Revisit on a regular basis. It's fun to get caught up in the fervour of a real auction, too, such as Lawsons in Annandale and Bay East in Waterloo. Otherwise bid by phone or online. Garage sales: Garage sales are often advertised in local news- papers and on community notice- boards. There'll be plenty of rub- bish to look through before you strike gold, but you just might pick up something unbelievably cool. In the inner city, house- holders often hawk their un- wanted goods on their front step, or even on the footpath as part of a local council promotion called ''second-hand Saturday'' that can include whole streets.
