4 HLW - HOME LIVING: WEST, Tuesday, April 17, 2012 MB AGED CARE THE STEPS TO SAFETY Janita Singh LOOK OUT FOR HAZARDS IN THE HOME Tread warily . . . slippery surfaces and stairs are risk areas. MORE than 66,000 elderly people are taken to hospital each year after suffering a fall, with wom- en at far greater risk, says an Australian Institute of Health and Welfare report. The faIls could be as simple as tripping on loose rugs but the direct cost to the health system, according to the report, runs into the millions. Archicentre, the design and property service of the Aust- ralian Institute of Architects, says falls occur throughout life but it is in situations where the fall results in a life-threatening injury that it is a matter of concern. Environmental factors con- tributing to falls include slip- pery surfaces and uneven floors, poor lighting, poorly designed steps and stairs, lack of grab rails, and also hard surfaces causing injury on landing. But protruding door thre- sholds, loose rugs and carpet runners can also be hazardous, as well as tangled power and telephone cords. Behavioural factors such as DIY projects and gardening tasks on ladders and stepladders, and wearing unsuit- able footwear increase the risk of falls in older men and women. Research source: Monash University Accident Research Centre REDUCING THE RISK OF FALLS TIPS for the elderly on preventing falls in the home: A flat, accessible place is ideal for older residents who gradually lose mobil- ity or balance and risk injury while attempting to negotiate uneven paving or steps. Weather protection be- tween the garage and house will help reduce risks, such as carrying groceries in the rain over slippery surfaces. Interior colour schemes with good contrasts help people with diminishing eyesight identify doors and any changed surface conditions. Extra power points elim- inate the tangle of loose extension leads. Impact-absorbent floor surfaces to reduce poten- tial falls. Level-entry showers. Grab rails in the shower and toilet and at front and rear steps. Replace worn, torn or loose carpet. Put reflective strips on stairs. Install external sensor lights.
