MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, May 1, 2012 3 MOTHER'S DAY BUSINESS AS USUAL... MANY MISS OUT ON THEIR SPECIAL DAY Many mums miss out and end up being quite disappointed with their day. Janita Singh IT'S business as usual for most mums this Mother's Day with 74.5 per cent spending their day cleaning the house and doing chores rather than relaxing. A recent survey shows that most mums are tired, spend too much time on housework and miss out on special treats such as breakfast in bed and much- needed ''me'' time on their special day. A total of 1018 Australian mums, aged 18-65, took part in the survey conducted by Fantastic Furniture to see what mums, and dads, get up on Mother's Day. ''As an Australian company, we aim to understand consumer habits and lifestyles, so we conducted this survey to see how the majority of Australians spend Mother's Day,'' Fantastic Furniture general manager, merchandise and marketing Brent Allan said. ''We were surprised to see that many mums miss out and end up being quite disappointed with their day. ''When asked what the best thing about being a mum was, most said spending time with their kids, watching them grow and learn.'' TIME OFF FOR THE LUCKY FEW THE survey showed that 34 per cent of mums said they would like to spend Moth- er's Day having time off with a massage, facial or even lunch with the girls but this is a re- ality for only 5.44 per cent. No wonder 34 per cent said they look forward to Mother's Day but always end up feel- ing disappointed, with a whop- ping majority, 74.5 per cent, say- ing Mother's Day this year will be business as usual --- cleaning the house and washing dishes. Sleep, it seems, is a sought- after treat with 15 per cent say- ing they would love a lie-in on Mother's Day, but only 7.28 per cent achieve this. More than a quarter of respondents, 25.92 per cent, said that tiredness was the worst thing about being a mum. More than half said they averaged only about six hours sleep a night. Mums miss out on rest time too, with 20.86 per cent of mums averaging just 1-2 hours relax- ing on the sofa each week, compared to their partners, 49.54 per cent of whom average about 4-6 hours.
