The graphics arts industry often refers to this as a UV-cut, no-UV or UV-filtered measurement condition, generally accomplished by eliminating wavelengths of energy less than 400 nm from illuminating the test surface. There are two ways to accomplish this: adjust the light source to eliminate this range from its spectrum or, stop this range from reaching the test surface by introducing optical filters. With M2, the ISO committee did not specify a specific illuminant, such as A or D50, but it did state that the light source should provide a continuous spectrum from 420 nm to 700 nm. OBAs used in paper stock usu- ally glow when they are exposed to ultraviolet light in the 300 nm to 400 nm range. To eliminate the possibility of this fluorescence, companies should remove wavelengths up to 420 nm. However, the committee also indicates that instru- ments may need to measure results at 400 nm and 410 nm wavelengths to capture reflectance factors. Companies need to decide on the range of wave- lengths from 400 nm to 420 nm that they will measure, depending on the sensitivi- ty and discrimination of their instruments. ILLUMINATION CONDITION M3 Measurement condition M3 defines the effect of polarization. Polarizing filters naturally cut UV energy, so M3 combines the UV cut requirements of M2 with a definition of polarization.
