6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, May 8, 2012 MB LIGHTING LIGHT SWITCH MAKEOVER COLOURS TO BRIGHTEN HOMES Susan Redman THE RIGHT LIGHT In small spaces, good lighting is key to emphasising proportion and creating a sense of drama. A smaller but brilliantly designed light fitting over a dining table will make a tiny nook seem larger as attention is drawn to the light and away from the walls. Similarly, a few floor and table lamps around a lounge room break up the space by providing a variety of lighting sources. Mood lighting in the bedroom, although make sure you have a strong directional lightsource for reading, soothingly promises space even when there is none. In larger rooms, allow some areas to fade a little into darker nooks. Space out lighting so corners of the room recede. Dinner tables are great places to experiment with candles and tealights on special occasions. Fairy lights in trees and way-finder lights on paths create an atmospheric view of outdoor areas. An orange Linea light switch cover plate provides a small but significant detail in this industrial-style setting. THE shape of a door stopper, the profile of skirting boards, the colour of a light switch cover plate -- when it comes down to deliberat- ing over the finer points of a decorating project, interior designers will often repeat the dictum of German-born modernist architect Mies van der Rohe that God is in the details. These small-fry details of decorating may seem incidental but if chosen well they can signifi- cantly change the look of a room. Consider the humble light switch. No longer just a white plastic service pad for switching on lights and other electrical in- stallations, the latest crop of prod- ucts has had a designer makeover. Interior stylist Sibella Court says that even an old-fashioned bathroom or kitchen can be up- dated by changing the switches and powerpoints to colour match or contrast with other features in the room. One of the biggest names in the light switch business HPM has capitalised on the success of its colourful Linea range with some metallic cover plates introduced to complement two other collections titled Brights and Earths. Sibella Court says the colourful variety shows that the use of colour at home is now more eclectic than it has been in the recent past. ''People are not afraid to play with colours or use a favourite one. Orange and battleship grey are two good cases in point,'' she says. But for sheer glam, Court suggests installing the Arteor range of interchangeable cover plates from LeGrand. These super- sophisticated slimline switch plates offer 17 options in exotic finishes such as stingray leather, light and dark timber or classic woven metal. Other stylish switch-hitters in- clude the Strato and Modena Series from electrical technology giant Clipsal. The minimal inter- changeable switch surrounds come in 10 colours, and can be customised to match cabinetry just by choosing from Laminex laminate colours, including tex- tured and grainy wood.
