2 HLS - HOME LIVING: SOUTH, Tuesday, May 22, 2012 MB KITCHEN JOIN THE HOT SHOTS YOUR COFFEE MACHINE TIPS Janita Singh The coffee machine, a staple in most kichens, like Smeg's Classic range. AUSTRALIANS have had a long love affair with coffee. Coffee addiction is perhaps one of the last remaining socially acceptable substance addictions happily tolerated by everyone. And from the looks of the mushrooming coffee stops at every street and cor- ner, there is no turning back. Although Australian cafe culture is booming, coffee ex- perts say we still prefer a good home brew. And that's why having a coffee machine at home today is becoming in- creasingly common. But mak- ing that humble cup is cer- tainly not what it used to be. Italian manufacturer Smeg says the luxury of drinking freshly brewed coffee at home is something coffee lovers do not take lightly, and the coffee machine is seen as a serious investment. The invention of the auto- matic coffee machine has be- come our morning saviour. And manufacturers are res- ponding by offering great choices. Automatic and man- ual coffee machines, plus pods and capsule technology come in various styles and finishes. Smeg says its Classic and Linear built-in coffee machines are indicators of what con- sumers want. These are fully automatic so the strength, tem- perature and length of coffee can all be easily regulated. DeLonghi CEO, Paolo Alber- toni, says Australian coffee lovers want the Italian experi- ence, which is now easy to re- create at home. Smeg says anyone consider- ing buying a coffee machine should check the following: Ensure the pump has suf- ficient pump pressure -- 15 bar is considered ideal. Ensure the coffee machine can be adjusted to individual tastes -- not everyone likes the same strength of coffee. For really fresh coffee, it should have an integrated cof- fee bean grinder. This will grind exactly the right amount of coffee required. It should be easy to clean so that no stale milk is left in the milk line. Look for ma- chines that have a built-in flush or rinse function to en- sure the best tasting brew. HOMEMAKING ALL THE RAGE HAVING a coffee maker or ma- chine at home is all the rage. But if you're looking to buy, you may be overwhelmed by the choices avail- able. So do your homework before shopping. Your Need: Think how much coffee you make at home and how big the family is. For small famil- ies, a simple manual machine will do, but for big families with children buy something a bit more exciting, for instance a machine that makes hot chocolate. Money Matters: Coffee ma- chines can cost anywhere from $100 to thousands, depending on features, function, aesthetic ap- peal and fun factor. Attention to detail: Read through product details and look around. You can get anything from a filtered coffee maker, per- colator to fully-fledged fancy de- vice. Check models and popularity: Look around and invest in some- thing that will meet your family's needs for years. Anything additional: Some coffee machines can make expres- so and cappuccino, grind fresh coffee beans and automatically steam and clean.
