MB HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 1 MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN ADD A DASH OF DARING Susan Redman Decorate furniture with a pattern and surround with favourite black and white objects, including frames and feature pieces, such as this red umbrella. This Kaila console table from Eco Chic, above, can be custom upholstered in any fabric. QUICK IDEAS FOR BLACK AND WHITE Try an all-black or white floor. Stain floorboards with a good grain to show texture of japan black or limewash. Create a striking table setting with black and white china. Combine small houndstooth check with pinstripes on chair covers, bedspreads and pillow shams. Hang a collection of black metal trays or old vintage signs on a dining room wall. Black objects lined up on a sideboard serve as an outline that sets off specific areas. Group them together and add one colour. Walls painted stark white or a soft, ivory white serve as a perfect background for framed photographs, prints and other artwork. Choose ice-white frames for subtle contrast. Choose dark wood or painted black frames and hang on chocolate or tan walls. Use black cabinetry in unexpected places, such as in the kitchen or bathroom. Photographs in black and white are instantly appealing. To update the idea, download and apply to your digital images some of the new filter apps available to slightly discolour or distort your images. White sheets are still firm favourites. Limit black in the bedroom to furniture, light fittings or even blankets. INTERIOR IDEAS Chair by Fenton & Fenton. TO get real excitement in a room, pair black with white. It's a colour combination that can be dressed up or down, depending on other elements in your home. But if you're a little timid about going to extremes, try a softly, softly approach. Caramel and mushroom painted walls or soft fur- nishings and blonde or li- med timber floors and furni- ture will keep a lid on the power of the monotone con- trast, but don't be afraid to experiment a little before you dampen things down. Try adding one decorative piece to the milieu that is a vibrant colour. Play with patterns, too. Wide stripes and pin stri- pes, ginghams and hound- stooth checks, black and white toile fabrics and wall- papers, metallics and matte finishes can be mixed around to create texture and interest in a limited palette. Collaborating with black and white is also a great way to revamp inner-city terraces or country cot- tages. Add some black metal pieces, such as glass-topped coffee tables on a black iron base, dark steel shelving or black enamelled factory lights for an industrial edge.
