MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 3 HOMEWORK YOU'VE GOT THE POWER HOW TO CUT BILLS Janita Singh Details: Save energy at home at www.ausgrid.com.au/waystosave It's important to switch off home office equipment when you're done for the day COMPUTERS, printers and modems are essential for any home office but running them all the time can add more than $100 a year to your electricity bill. Ausgrid energy efficiency expert Paul Myors said there were clever ways to save in your home office. ''Try and group your home office equip- ment onto a single switch power board and turn them off when they're not in use,'' Mr Myors said. For extra safety, get one with a surge protector to help protect equipment during storms. One flick of a switch will save money and the carbon emissions wasted by standby power. Mr Myors said while recent Australian Bureau of Statistics data showed about 60 per cent of Australian households owned at least one laptop computer, 55 per cent still owned a desktop that could use more energy than a laptop. ''And if one desktop computer was left on for 20 hours a day unnecessarily, over a year, it could add more than $100 to your energy bill and generate 850kg of CO2,'' Mr Myors said. So it's important to switch off when you're done for the day. Most computers can also be set to automatically turn to sleep mode, which can reduce power use to just a few watts. Interestingly, flat screen moni- tors are getting more efficient and some screens use about half the energy than those of several years ago. Those in the market for new home office equipment should look at the most efficient models that suit their needs and budget.
