MB HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 5 DESERT WEAVERS WEAVING A NEW STORY INDIGENOUS LIGHT DESIGNS Susan Redman Martha Protty and Nyinku Kulitja at Docker River in 2010. Picture: R Hammerton, Tjanpi Desert Weavers, NPY Womens Council THE Central Western Desert is a long way from the 400sq m New York loft-style showroom in industrial Rosebery where cool hunters flock to buy the Australian-made and designed furniture and homewares of Koskela, but this is where the product of a unique creative collaboration is going on show. Koskela or, more precisely, the designer duo Russel Koskela and Sasha Titchkosky, have teamed up with the Tjanpi Des- ert Weavers in a second lighting partnership (the first was with the Yuta Badayala weavers) to produce the Tjanpi range of lampshades. Traditional weaving proces- ses are used to incorporate colourfully dyed pandanus leaves and bush string and other indigenous weaving ma- terials in an exciting project that marries traditional craft with modern urban design. The Tjanpi Desert Weavers was set up by the Ngaanyatjarra Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Women's Council in 1995 as a social enterprise, providing an income source for hundreds of women who go out bush, collect their local grasses (or Tjanpi) and weave them into baskets, sculptures and now lighting. There are more than 400 mothers, daughters, aunties, sisters and grandmothers from 28 remote communities across Western Australia, Northern Territory and South Australia in the group, and they clearly love the camaraderie. ''When we make Tjanpi work, (we're) sitting around with fam- ily and sharing stories,'' co- weaver Jennifer Mitchell says of the richly collaborative work ethic of the group. ''Sometimes joking around, sometimes talking serious, but always sharing stories. ''Family is where we learn from each other and how we hear all the news.'' ''What better kind of work is there?'' Paniny Mick, one of the weavers, says. ''It is strong and important work. We are happy doing it.''
