Some are Flexo in High School students from local Mecklenburg County schools in the Charlotte, NC area. Others are industry professionals looking to retrain. More still are individuals who have simply sought out a new career, and found it at the Harper Campus of Central Piedmont Community College (CPCC) in the Graphic Arts and Imaging Technology program. A two-year degree in graphic arts has been offered by CPCC for approximately 20 years. It can be taken with a number of concentrations, including basic and advanced prepress, and flex- ography. The flexo courses are coordinated and taught by Zachery 1. Blackburn (graphic arts instructor), Gareth Burns (graphic arts program chair) and Stephen Gerhardt (Harper National Flexographic Center coordinator). .: ",,,j,,":;.. ..."b fÏ · .0 1 I , "... . . ,: ø ..;.; " '. Some classes have as many as 15 students at a given time, others around six or seven. Those who choose to con- centrate on flexography will receive extensive press-side experi- ence on all of CPCe's four narrow-web presses, which includes two Comco Cadets, a Mark Andy Scout and a Mark Andy 830. Those presses are also utilized for the annual Phoenix Challenge International High School Flexo Skills competition, which is hosted at the college. After graduation, some will go immediately into the field- the school boasts a 99 percent placement rate within the first year.
