Home Living : June 5th 2012
MB HLN - HOME LIVING: NORTH, Tuesday, June 5, 2012 1 Inside CRAFTY STUFF ALL SEWN UP NEW TAKE ON WINTER BAKING NESTING IN YOUR WINTER BEDROOM IT'S TIME TO GO FOR BOLD COLOURS DO THE TANGO Susan Redman Details: Visit dulux.com.au to see six new paint colour palettes The use of bold orange and pink stripes helped secure recognition for design practice Atticus & Milo at this year s Interior Design Awards. BLOCKING TIPS Don't mix too many colours together -- it's not a carnival atmosphere you're trying to achieve. Remember the rule of odds: keep your choices limited to three to five bold colours. Repeat one of your favourite colours to strengthen the colour-block scheme. Repetition will unite the whole. If you're a bit timid about large blocks of colour on walls or furniture, use homeware accessories to achieve the look. Group together decorative vases, picture frames or cushions etc. When using small decorative devices, such as pillows, wall decorations or rugs, scatter them across the room. If bright colours scare you, get in on the trend by mixing in some neutrals. Don't forget the ceiling if you are painting walls. A stark white ceiling will ruin the effect. Choose a tint of one of the other colours in the room or a warm neutral shade, such as grey or beige. HOME DECORATING WHEN Pantone announced Tangerine Tango as their 2012 colour of the year, interior designers knew that vibrant block colour in the home was a trend with staying power. Interior designer and Yel- lowtrace blog founder Dana Tomic Hughes predicts colour blocking -- combin- ing two or three chunks of solid colour in one outfit or setting -- will be a key driver of how colour is used over the next 12 to 18 months. She and fellow stylist Jo Carmichael were asked to create new palettes for Dulux Paints to reflect the vivid colour trend as it moves from fashion design to interior decoration. They found that the look popular in fashion, clashing colours and acid brights, needed to be toned down in the home. And warmed up, too, says Carmichael who created a russet-toned pal- ette for Dulux called Time- Honoured. If you've been living in a world of neutral for a while, then this is a chance to start introducing the new colour concept.
