6 HLF - HOME LIVING: NORTH WEST, Tuesday, June 5, 2012 MB LOCK-UP TIPS HINTS TO KEEP WINDOWS SAFE THE Children's Hospital at West- mead's Kids Can't Fly campaign brings about awareness on win- dow safety for children. An increasing number of chil- dren are admitted to hospital each year with serious injuries as a result of falling from windows and balconies. These falls often occur in the child's own home, over the war- mer months when windows are left open. To increase safety of children near windows and on balconies, the Children's Hospital highly recommends: All windows above the ground floor be opened no more than 10cm. Window locks or latches fitted to stop windows opening more than 10cm. Beds and other furniture be kept away from windows to stop chil- dren accessing windows. Parents not rely on flyscreens to prevent a child falling out. Children be supervised and taught to play away from windows. APARTMENTS and multi-storey homes are about to get a little safer for children --- thanks to a rule change for windows in new buildings. The Australian Building Codes Board has ruled that all windows in new homes and apartments that are more than two metres off the ground must be either fitted with window locks that stop them being opened more than 125mm (12.5 cm), or must have reinforced screens to prevent children from falling from a height. The decision was made after consultation with industry auth- orities and will come into effect from May 2013, allowing the indus- try time to prepare for changes. The Children's Hospital at Westmead's Kids Can't Fly cam- paign has been part of the rally for change. Director of Trauma and a Professor of Pediatric Surgery at the Children's Hospital, Danny Cass is a strong supporter and was one of the prime instigators of this motion. Dreambaby, the child safety expert brand, was also part of the campaign. ''With too many children at risk of falling from their own homes, this new ruling means a brighter and safer future for children,'' Dreambaby director of product development Carolyn Ziegler said. ''We have worked extensively with Westmead and have been a large part of the working group by helping to organise a window safety symposium, Kids Can't Fly. We are so pleased the National Construction Code has included these important and lifesaving changes,'' she said.
